Clothes Washers Tips

When you shop for a washer, the biggest decision you will have to make is the degree of automation you should buy. The more automatic features there are. the higher the price. Consider the use you will make of each control, and balance time and convenience against additional cost. To help you decide, this chapter covers the full range of controls from the simple ones to programmed appliances. I: also explains other aspects of washers that may be important to you—convenience features, cost, size, construction, installation, and repair.

TYPES OF AUTOMATIC WASHERS

Two basic kinds of washers are available automatic and non-automatics. The difference between the two is in automation how much the washer will do for you automatically. Either kind will provide satisfactory soil removal, given the proper washing conditions and a sufficient amount of detergent, water, and mechanical motion.
With the automatic washer, you set the controls and, without any further attention, the washer fills with water to the reselected level at a reselected temperature, washes, drains, rinses, spins the clothes to a damp dry, and stops Automatic washers are either top loaders or front loaders.

Top Loaders.

Laundry is placed around an upright agitator in the center of the tub. Most agitators have finlike extensions to give additional movement to the water and clothes.
The top loader can be loaded and unloaded from a standing position, requires no extra floor space for the door to open or for work room, and usually offers a greater load capacity than the front loader. Articles may be put in or removed at any point of the cycle without spilling water.

Front Loaders.

Baffle extensions in the tub help carry wash
along as the tub rotates so the clothes are tumbled through the water.
Front loaders usually use less water and detergent per load than the top loaders, and their tops can be used as work surfaces.

Automatic washing machines have control centers with buttons or dials that allow you to tell the machine what you want it to do at different parts of the wash cycle. By means of these buttons and dials, you can reselect such things as water level, wash-water temperature, length of wash time, speed of agitation or tumbling, rinse-water temperature, spin speed, and special cycles.

Selecting a washer with a control center that will give you the degree of automation you want or need, within your budget limitations, is the key to buying. Here are the major points to consider when selecting washer controls.

Water Temperature.

Most washers provide three water temperatures: hot, warm, and cold. Controls for water temperatures are set up differently on different washers. For example, some machines have controls listing combinations of wash and rinse temperatures such as hot wash/warm rinse; warm wash/cold rinse; hot wash/cold rinse. If you buy this type, be sure you buy a model with all the water temperature combinations that are important to you.
