which will help you to reduce your utility bill and prevent your
appliances from needing future repairs. However, if you need to
deal with electricity in order for your problem to be fixed, for
your own safety we strongly suggest that you DON'T do it on your

yourself, so please leave it to a professional who is trained and
experienced with this type of issue. Call us today to make an electrical

Dryers used to be controlled simply by setting a timer. You guessed
how long it would take to dry a particular load of laundry and set
the timer for 60 minutes or 75 minutes, etc. If the clothes came
out dry, chances are you continued to use that setting. However,
some types of clothes dry much more quickly than others. Overdrying
can reduce the life of clothes. Most of the better quality dryers
today include this feature.
Features That Reduce the Need for Ironing
While the energy used for ironing clothes is not technically part
of the energy used for washing or drying clothes, it is very related.
Moisture-sensing automatic shut off helps here especially if the
dryer includes a feature to adjust the level of dryness desired.
Dryer Exhaust Vent Hood
Along with your dryer, buy a dryer vent hood that blocks air infiltration.
Dryer vent hoods are available that seal very tightly when the dryer
blower is not on. Standard dryer vent hoods have a simpler flapper
that is not as effective. Ask your appliance salesperson about dryer
vent systems and spend the extra $15 to $20 to buy a tight-sealing
one.
Electric dryers may be vented inside the home during the winter
months if the house air is dry and if the air vent is properly filtered.
Compact electric dryers in apartments and condos are sometimes installed
for indoor venting. If the electric dryer is vented inside, watch
for moisture on the windows, which would indicate that you're introducing
too much moisture into the house.
Dryer Operating costs.
To calculate operating costs for gas and electric dryers, here
are some facts you should know.
1. Drying an average load takes about 3.4 kilowatt-hours of electricity.
2. Drying the same load takes approximately 14 cubic feet of natural
gas.
3. Get information from your local utility companies about the local
cost for electricity per kilowatt-hour, and the local cost of gas
per cubic foot.
Fuel rates differ across the country, so your operating costs may
differ from those in our samples. But the arithmetic would go like
this for figuring electric dryer operating expenses per load:
3.4 kilowatt-hours to dry an average load X2.5 cents per kilowatt-hour
8.5 cents total cost
And the following steps are needed to find the cost for running
a gas dryer for one load:
14.0 cubic feet of gas to dry an average load X 0.09 cents per
cubic foot
1.3 cents for gas
* 0.4 cents for electricity per load
1.1 cents total cost
When you multiply the cost per load by the number of loads you dry
per year, you may find that one fuel will give a substantial saving
over the other.
Size. Two things need to be considered in size—capacity and
Floor space.
Capacity. Dryers are available that handle maximum loads from 9
to 20 pounds dry weight. Capacities are usually listed on the dryer
hang tag. Remember that wet clothes weigh at least twice as much
as dry clothes.
Floor space. Check the measurements of the dryer you plan to buy
to be certain it will fit your floor space. Regular dryer widths
range from 26 to 31. Inches, heights from 42 to 45 inches, and depths
from 25 to 28 inches. Compact dryers as small as 21 inches wide
and 36 inches high are available for small loads.
Construction. Both quality and safety are important construction
considerations.
Quality. Both drum and cabinet should have smooth, durable finishes.
Stainless steel, zinc coating, or porcelain enamel gives you good
corrosion protection for the drum. The finish should be listed on
the dryer hang tag or in the manufacturer's brochure. Enamel is
generally preferred on the dryer cabinet surface because of its
resistance to common laundry chemicals and scratches.
Safety. To be assured of the electrical and mechanical safety of
your dryer, buy one that carries a label of a testing laboratory,
such its t I ii(lerwriters Laboratories, Inc., or the American Gas
Association.
